Ashqelon
Proper noun
Ashkelon — Philistine city

Definition

The Hebrew name Ashqelon refers to one of the five major cities of the Philistine confederation (the Pentapolis), situated on the Mediterranean coast. It was a major trade center and appears throughout the prophetic literature as a symbol of Philistine opposition to Israel and as a target of divine judgment.

Usage & Theological Significance

Ashkelon features prominently in Samson's conflict with the Philistines (Judges 14) and in the prophetic oracles against the nations in Jeremiah, Amos, and Zephaniah. Zephaniah 2:4 declares its desolation, while Zechariah 9:5 prophesies terror for Ashkelon when God moves against the nations. Theologically, Ashkelon represents the world-systems that stand against God's purposes — cities built on power and trade that will ultimately bow before divine judgment.
