אָשֵׁר
Asher
Proper Noun (masculine)
Asher / Happy One

Definition

The Hebrew name Asher (אָשֵׁר) comes from the root ashar (H833), meaning to be straight, to go forward, to be blessed or happy. Asher was the eighth son of Jacob, born to Zilpah, Leah's maidservant (Genesis 30:13). His name means 'Happy' or 'Blessed,' and this was prophesied over him: 'From Asher his food shall be rich, and he shall yield royal delicacies' (Genesis 49:20). The tribe of Asher settled in the fertile coastal region of northern Canaan.

Usage & Theological Significance

The name Asher carries a theology of divine blessing and material provision as signs of God's favor. Moses' blessing over Asher in Deuteronomy 33:24–25 says, 'Most blessed of sons is Asher; let him be the favorite of his brothers, and let him dip his foot in oil. Your bars shall be iron and bronze, and as your days, so shall your strength be.' The prophetess Anna, who recognized the infant Jesus in the Temple, was from the tribe of Asher (Luke 2:36–38) — showing that even in the New Testament, this tribal line carried forward a legacy of faithful watching for the Messiah. The word points to a key theme: happiness and blessing flow from God's covenant faithfulness, not human effort.
