תֹּכֶן
token
Noun, masculine
measurement, standard, fixed weight

Definition

Token (תֹּכֶן) means a fixed measurement, standard weight, or established proportion. It derives from the root takan, meaning to regulate, weigh, or measure. The concept points to God's perfect ordering and calibrating of all things — He weighs and measures with absolute accuracy. In human affairs, token describes the proper allotment or standardized measure that ensures justice.

Usage & Theological Significance

God is described as the One who establishes the token — the perfect measure — of all things. In Proverbs 16:2, 'the LORD weighs the heart' uses related vocabulary. Ezekiel uses takan of God weighing or trying the ways of man. The prophetic word is that God's ways are precise and just, even when His people find them arbitrary or unfair. His measurement never errs.

Key Bible Verses

Isaiah 40:13 Who can fathom the Spirit of the LORD, or instruct the LORD as his counselor? Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way?
Job 28:25 When he established the force of the wind and measured [takan] out the waters.

Word Study

The God who measures winds and waters (Job 28:25) operates with the same precision in human hearts. This is both terrifying and comforting: terrifying because our self-assessments fail His standard; comforting because His measurement is perfect justice, not arbitrary caprice. The atonement satisfies God's precise token — the full weight of justice met in Christ.
