Tanchum
Noun, masculine
Comfort, consolation

Definition

Tanchum (H8575) means comfort, consolation, solace. It comes from the root nacham (H5162, to comfort/repent) and describes the soothing relief that comes from being comforted in grief or affliction.

Usage & Theological Significance

Isaiah 57:18 and other texts show God as the one who comforts (nachem) His afflicted people. The name Nahum means 'comfort.' Paul echoes this when he declares God the 'Father of mercies and God of all comfort' (2 Corinthians 1:3–4). The Holy Spirit as Parakletos is the Greek counterpart: the one called alongside to comfort.
