Ager
Proper noun, masculine
Agee (father of Shammah)

Definition

Ager (Agee) is the name of the father of Shammah, one of David's three mighty men. The name may relate to a root meaning "to gather" or "to be afraid."

Usage & Theological Significance

Agee appears only in 2 Samuel 23:11 as the father of Shammah the Hararite. Shammah himself performed a legendary act of valor, standing alone in a field of lentils to defend it against the Philistines while the rest of Israel fled. The LORD brought a great victory through him. Though Agee is known only through his son, his name is preserved in Scripture because of Shammah's faithfulness. A father is sometimes immortalized by the character of his children.
