בָּטַח
batach
Verb
to trust, rely on, be confident

Definition

The primary Hebrew word for trust — a settled, confident reliance upon someone or something. Batach connotes leaning your full weight upon what you trust. It appears about 120 times and is frequently used in the Psalms to describe the posture of faith toward God.

Usage & Theological Significance

While aman (H539) is intellectual/relational belief, batach is experiential confidence — the lived experience of resting in God. The prophets warn against misplaced batach — trusting in military strength, wealth, or foreign alliances.

Key Bible Verses

Proverbs 3:5 Trust [batach] in the LORD with all your heart.
Psalm 37:3 Trust [batach] in the LORD and do good.
Psalm 56:3 When I am afraid, I put my trust [batach] in you.
Isaiah 26:4 Trust [batach] in the LORD forever, for the LORD himself is the Rock eternal.
Jeremiah 17:7 Blessed is the one who trusts [batach] in the LORD.

Word Study

Jeremiah 17:5–8 contrasts two types of trust: "Cursed is the one who trusts in man... Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD." Misplaced trust produces a bush in the wasteland; trust in God produces a tree by water whose leaves are always green.
