Time Mgmt vs. Priority Mgmt.

July 23, 2011 · Spiritual Formation

You know what the problem is with all these web-sites, blogs, lectures and self help books or programs on time managment? They take too much stinking time to go through!!! I finally found some time this evening to get this started, but I'm probably going to take even more time trying to condense what I'm going to say. (even that sentence I spent 30 seconds thinking about deleting)

First a story: while heading back up to Maria's room in the hospital after giving birth to Boaz, I met a lady in the elevator who was on her way to “provide time & stress management training to hospital associates." Since I had just read chapter 12 of this book; I said, “do you also teach about priority management?" I wasn't trying to put her on the spot or anything, she raised her eyebrows and said, “yes, that's definitely important" and we parted ways. I guess it would have taken too long to go very deep into the topic (as it would in this one blog) so I'll just end with a few lines from the book I mentioned:

“No matter what skills, techniques, or systems you put in place, there will never be enough time for you to do everything you have on your plate. But you do have time to get the most important things done; and the most important things in life aren't things. They're our closest relationships." The author goes on to mention the topic I've set up in opposition to time managment, and I've set them at odds because I see many problems with focusing purely on managing time to get stuff done. The problem that I personally experience is allowing the numerous things to crowd out higher priorities for my time (case in point: trying to get this blog in right now, instead of just waiting till tomorrow morning, waking up early on a Sunday and posting then)

Well, I'm still learning… and may you learn from my mistakes as I hopefully will as well!

Peace,
Adam
