Assessment
President Lyndon B. Johnson considered the First Christian Church in Johnson City TX his "home church." LBJ was baptized in 1923 at age 14 during a Pedernales River revival hosted by this congregation, joining the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on the conviction that the Disciples' beliefs aligned with his views (he had been raised in Baptist churches). The congregation was organized in 1903; the original sanctuary stood at 6th & Avenue E and the present church is at 401 E Cypress. Currently a Christian Church (DoC) congregation, reflecting the denomination's 1968 Restructure into mainline polity and subsequent affirming positions. Listed here for civic/political historical significance.
