Sen. Samuel J. Ervin Jr. (D-NC), chairman of the Senate Watergate Committee, was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church Morganton, where he served as both Deacon and Elder. Ervin attended the church as a boy and returned to active membership when he retired from the Senate in 1974. His funeral was held at First Presbyterian Morganton in 1985. The congregation honors Ervin's constitutional legacy as a Burke County native son. Currently a PC(USA) mainline congregation under Interim Pastor Rev. Dr. Lance Perry, reflecting denominational shifts that occurred decades after Ervin's formation.
