Pastor Credentials
Rob Bell: Founder; author ('Love Wins' — universalist-leaning); left evangelical faith; current leadership credentials unknown

10-Point Theological Scorecard
Christology
Is Jesus the only way? (John 14:6)
Rob Bell's 'Love Wins' questioned eternal hell and the exclusivity of Christ as the only way of salvation. Universalist-leaning theology. Bell's legacy pervades.
WARNING!
Scripture
Inerrancy affirmed? Final authority?
Bell explicitly departed from inerrancy. His approach deconstructed traditional evangelical views of Scripture. Post-Bell leadership has not clearly repudiated this trajectory.
WARNING!
Men's Discipleship
Intentional formation for men?
No men's discipleship in any traditional sense.
WARNING!
Soteriology
Faith alone? How is salvation presented?
Bell's universalist leanings in 'Love Wins' make the church's soteriology suspect. 'Does Gandhi go to hell?' — Bell's answer was effectively 'no.'
WARNING!
Gender / Biblical Design
Biblical manhood and womanhood by God's design — patriarchal, complementarian, egalitarian, or affirming gender ideology?
Bell's progressive trajectory included egalitarian and eventually affirming positions. Current leadership's stance is unclear but the church's DNA is progressive.

Progressive/egalitarian trajectory from founder's influence
WARNING!
Leadership Structure
Male elders/pastors? Accountability?
Founded on Bell's personality; post-Bell leadership has been unstable. No clear doctrinal correction has occurred.
WARNING!
Preaching Style
Expository or topical/therapeutic?
Bell was a compelling storyteller but his teaching systematically deconstructed orthodox Christian beliefs.
WARNING!
Mission Clarity
Great Commission central?
Community engagement and social justice emphasis. Mission clarity on Great Commission is doubtful.
Caution
Cultural Alignment
DEI/CRT language? Social justice crowding out gospel?
Progressive trajectory. Bell eventually left evangelicalism entirely and now operates in progressive/spiritual-but-not-religious space.
WARNING!
Accountability Structure
Denominational home, elder plurality, or external network — is the pastor answerable to anyone?
Staff page lists Lead Pastor Troy Hatfield + 4 associate pastors including Nikki Grasmeyer (Students Pastor, female). Elder board of 11 chaired by Kate Neckers (female) with majority-female membership (Nancy Bierema, Sarah Christmann, Deb Hoover, Pam Jackson, Leslea White). Egalitarian progressive governance with no confessional tie — accountability trends progressive, not toward orthodoxy. Keep RED (overall already BLACK per Bell legacy).
WARNING!

Assessment
Mars Hill Bible Church was founded by Rob Bell, who became perhaps the most prominent example of evangelical deconstruction in the early 2010s. His book 'Love Wins' denied the traditional doctrine of hell and questioned the exclusivity of Christ for salvation. Bell eventually left the church, left evangelicalism, and now operates in a progressive/new-age spiritual space. The church he left behind carries his DNA. RED — Rob Bell's legacy is one of apostasy. Current leadership has not clearly repudiated his theological direction. Avoid.
