10-Point Theological Scorecard
Christology
Is Jesus the only way? (John 14:6)
Assemblies of God affiliation affirms Trinity and Christ's deity per AG Fundamental Truths. NCC homepage does not articulate doctrine specifically; generic Jesus-focused language. Green on denominational default.
Strong
Scripture
Inerrancy affirmed? Final authority?
Assemblies of God affirms Scripture inerrancy, but charismatic framework adds extra-biblical 'words of knowledge,' prophecy, and experience-driven spirituality that can compete with Scripture's authority.
Caution
Men's Discipleship
Intentional formation for men?
NCC has life groups and men's engagement, but no dedicated men's discipleship infrastructure as the primary vehicle.
Caution
Soteriology
Faith alone? How is salvation presented?
AoG affirms faith alone for salvation (sola fide), but may add 'second blessing' / baptism of the Holy Spirit with tongues as normative expectation. Salvation clearly gospel-centered but framework can add layers.
Caution
Gender / Biblical Design
Biblical manhood and womanhood by God's design — patriarchal, complementarian, egalitarian, or affirming gender ideology?
Assemblies of God historically has allowed women in pastoral roles. NCC's stance on female senior pastors/elders needs individual verification — Batterson is complementarian but AoG doesn't require it.
AoG allows women in ministry roles — NCC's specific elder/pastoral gender policy needs verification; Batterson is personally complementarian but AoG denominational policy allows female ordination
WARNING!
Leadership Structure
Male elders/pastors? Accountability?
Lead Pastor Mark Batterson with Pastor Joel Schmidgall and team; AG affirms women in pastoral ministry (NCC has had female teaching pastors). Single-charismatic-leader-plus-team model — watch for celebrity-pastor dynamic.
WARNING!
Preaching Style
Expository or topical/therapeutic?
Batterson is a gifted communicator and visionary thinker. However, his style is more topical/narrative than expository. He's an ideas guy and cultural connector, not a verse-by-verse expositor.
Caution
Mission Clarity
Great Commission central?
Mission: 'Bless the Lord. Bless the City. Bless the Nations. Bless the Generations.' — Great Commission framed with 'launching pad for world-changers' language emphasizing cultural influence.
Strong
Cultural Alignment
DEI/CRT language? Social justice crowding out gospel?
NCC operates in the DC political ecosystem and intentionally engages culture — both a strength (marketplace presence) and risk (drift). Language around 'justice' should be evaluated. | MOOP-attendance note: Adam Johns attended NCC many years ago. Historical attendance only — does not extend to current-trajectory endorsement (NCC remains RED-rated for charismatic/Bathersonian "your dream is what God wants" framing per existing assessment). | CONSOLIDATION 2026-04-28: Three duplicate records existed (national-community-church-dc, -dc-2, -dc-3). Merged to this canonical record. Rating elevated from RED to BLACK based on prior dc-2 framing: "Assemblies of God multi-site, Mark Batterson, Revoice-adjacent." NCC has been linked to Side B sympathetic content, prosperity-adjacent "your dream is what God wants" theology, and post-2020 cultural-conformity drift. Adam (MOOP) attended NCC many years ago — historical attendance flagged but does not extend to current-trajectory endorsement.

Accountability Structure
Denominational home, elder plurality, or external network — is the pastor answerable to anyone?
Assemblies of God — provides accountability, but AoG's charismatic framework introduces tensions around gender roles and extra-biblical spiritual gifts.
Caution
Assessment
National Community Church under Mark Batterson is culturally influential, evangelistically aggressive, and Batterson himself is clearly Christ-centered in his books and preaching. NCC is known for meeting in movie theaters, Ebenezers Coffeehouse (their ministry-owned coffee shop), and reaching young professionals in DC. The Assemblies of God affiliation provides structure and accountability. However: AoG's charismatic framework, Batterson's topical preaching style, and the DC-area cultural pressure points are real concerns for a man wanting deep doctrinal formation. Visit with discernment. NCC is a good entry point for unchurched people and city engagement, but may not be the primary spiritual food source for a man wanting expository depth.

Enrichment Notes

AG denomination affirms female pastors; NCC 'red' rating appropriate given AG charismatic/egalitarian posture and Batterson celebrity-pastor dynamic.
