Assessment
Glide in the Tenderloin — under Cecil Williams and his successors — removed the cross from the sanctuary decades ago and publicly reframed its "Celebration" gatherings as non-confessional radical-inclusion events. The UMC and Glide formally split because Glide would not commit to centering Christian identity. It is a social-service nonprofit wearing the remnants of a church, and by its own choice no longer Christian in any confessional sense.
