Trinity United Methodist Church is the small-town Kansas Methodist church where Bob Dole grew up — his parents sent the Dole children "most Sundays" per multiple biographies, and the town of Russell held its public memorial farewell to Dole at this church when he died in 2021. The church remains active in the United Methodist Connection — affiliated with the Great Plains Conference. Following the 2019-2023 disaffiliation window, those UMC churches that remained (including Trinity Russell) are now part of a denomination that at General Conference 2024 removed restrictions on ordination of openly gay clergy and same-sex weddings.
