10-Point Theological Scorecard
Christology
Is Jesus the only way? (John 14:6)
Formally affirms the creeds but theological pluralism within TEC allows wide variation. Cathedral has hosted non-Christian religious services.
Caution
Scripture
Inerrancy affirmed? Final authority?
The Episcopal Church (TEC) has formally departed from biblical authority on sexual ethics, ordination of LGBTQ clergy, and same-sex marriage. The cathedral's leadership actively celebrated these departures.
WARNING!
Men's Discipleship
Intentional formation for men?
No dedicated men's discipleship ministry identified.
WARNING!
Soteriology
Faith alone? How is salvation presented?
TEC cathedral with 'A House of Prayer For All People' identity; emphasizes 'every person is a beloved child of God' — universalist-friendly framing. No substitutionary atonement or sola fide language. Black on TEC liberal trajectory.
Caution
Gender / Biblical Design
Biblical manhood and womanhood by God's design — patriarchal, complementarian, egalitarian, or affirming gender ideology?
Women bishops and priests fully ordained in TEC. Bishop Budde is female. Cathedral maintains fully egalitarian and LGBTQ+ affirming ordination.

Full female ordination including bishops; openly LGBTQ+ affirming ordination — opposite of complementarian

Leadership Structure
Male elders/pastors? Accountability?
Female bishop, female deacons, openly gay clergy. No male-elder-only framework whatsoever.
WARNING!
Preaching Style
Expository or topical/therapeutic?
Lectionary-based liturgical preaching; 'Crossroads Podcast' and 'A Better Way' initiative suggest contemporary-social-issues orientation. Bishop Mariann Budde publicly preached against Trump administration policies in Jan 2025. Topical/social preaching pattern.
Caution
Mission Clarity
Great Commission central?
Mission: inclusive civic engagement, public programs, music, education. Gospel Great Commission not centered; cathedral's public role replaces evangelistic mission.
Caution
Cultural Alignment
DEI/CRT language? Social justice crowding out gospel?
Cathedral actively used as platform for progressive political causes. Bishop Budde's January 2025 sermon directly addressed political leaders from the pulpit in a confrontational political tone.

Accountability Structure
Denominational home, elder plurality, or external network — is the pastor answerable to anyone?
Episcopal Church (TEC) is institutionally apostate — departed from biblical authority on sexuality, gender, and marriage.

Assessment
Washington National Cathedral is an architectural masterpiece and a significant national landmark — but from a USMC Ministries theological alignment standpoint, it is firmly not recommended. The Episcopal Church (TEC) has abandoned biblical authority on human sexuality, ordains women as bishops and priests, performs same-sex marriages, and its leadership uses the pulpit for progressive political advocacy. Bishop Mariann Budde's nationally publicized January 2025 inaugural sermon was a political statement, not a Gospel proclamation. The Cathedral has hosted interfaith services including Islamic prayers. The beauty of the building and the grandeur of the liturgy should not be confused with theological fidelity. This is included in the directory for situational awareness — military and government personnel in DC will be invited to events here. Know what you're walking into.
