Assessment
Sen. John H. Glenn Jr. (D-OH), Marine fighter pilot, first American to orbit Earth (Friendship 7, 1962), four-term U.S. Senator (1974-1999), and at age 77 the oldest astronaut in spaceflight (STS-95, 1998), was raised in this New Concord congregation by his parents John Herschel and Clara Glenn. Glenn's mother was the first female Ruling Elder ordained at Westminster; his father was also a Ruling Elder. Glenn himself was a lifelong Presbyterian Ruling Elder. He and his wife Annie alternated between Westminster (John's family) and College Drive Presbyterian (Annie's family) during their hometown visits. In Washington he attended National Presbyterian Church and served on its Session. The church is currently a PC(USA) mainline congregation under Rev. Ellen Thomas, reflecting denominational shifts that occurred decades after Glenn's formation.
