Absurdism
/ab-SURD-iz-um/
noun
From Latin absurdus (out of tune, unreasonable), from ab- (away from) + surdus (deaf, dull). The philosophical movement, associated with Albert Camus, holds that the universe is inherently meaningless and that human attempts to find meaning are futile. The term entered English in the mid-twentieth century as existentialist despair was formalized into a system.

📖 Biblical Definition

Scripture declares that the universe is not absurd but created with purpose, order, and meaning by a personal God. "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork" (Psalm 19:1). The sense of meaninglessness that absurdism describes is real — but it is the consequence of the Fall, not the nature of reality. Ecclesiastes explores the futility of life "under the sun" — life lived apart from God — and concludes that meaning is found only in fearing God and keeping His commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13). Absurdism is the philosophy of a creature who has suppressed the knowledge of his Creator.

ABSURD', a. [L. absurdus, from ab and surdus, deaf, insensible.] Opposed to manifest truth; inconsistent with reason, or the plain dictates of common sense. An absurd man acts contrary to the clear dictates of reason or sound judgment. Note: For Webster, absurdity was a defect of reasoning — not a philosophy to be embraced. The idea of building a worldview on the premise that reality is meaningless would have been itself absurd.

📖 Key Scripture

Ecclesiastes 12:13 — "The end of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man."

Psalm 19:1 — "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork."

Romans 1:21-22 — "They became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Absurdism elevates meaninglessness into a virtue and calls despair "authenticity."

Absurdism is not merely a philosophical error — it is a spiritual condition. It is the endpoint of suppressing the knowledge of God described in Romans 1. Having rejected the Creator, man is left with a universe He insists has no meaning — and then congratulates Himself for facing that void with courage. This is not bravery; it is rebellion dressed as intellectualism. The "absurd hero" who creates His own meaning in a meaningless universe is simply a sinner who refuses to submit to the meaning God has already declared. The popularity of absurdism in modern culture reflects the fruit of atheism: a generation that has been taught there is no God and now wonders why nothing matters.

Usage

• "Absurdism is what happens when you remove God from the equation and then pretend the resulting despair is philosophical depth."

• "Ecclesiastes already diagnosed the absurdist condition three thousand years ago — and provided the answer absurdism refuses to accept: fear God and keep His commandments."
