The biblical concept of advocacy is rooted in Christ's intercessory work. "If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous" (1 John 2:1). The Greek parakletos (advocate, helper, comforter) describes both Christ and the Holy Spirit as ones who come alongside God's people to plead their case. Scripture also commands believers to advocate for the vulnerable: "Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute" (Proverbs 31:8). Biblical advocacy is grounded in God's law and righteousness — it speaks truth on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves.
The act of pleading for; intercession; a pleading for or in favor of.
AD'VOCACY, n. The act of pleading for; intercession. The act of defending or maintaining a cause or proposal. Note: Webster understood advocacy as speaking on behalf of another according to truth and law — not the modern political activism that co-opts the word to advance ideological agendas regardless of truth.
• 1 John 2:1 — "We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous."
• Proverbs 31:8-9 — "Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute."
• Isaiah 1:17 — "Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless."
• Romans 8:34 — "Christ Jesus is the one who... is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us."
Advocacy has been detached from truth and reduced to political activism for ideological causes.
Modern "advocacy" has been severed from its roots in truth and righteousness and transformed into a synonym for political activism. The word is now used to describe campaigns for abortion access, gender ideology, and the dismantling of biblical sexual ethics — all under the banner of "speaking for the marginalized." But biblical advocacy is always tethered to God's law. You cannot advocate for what God condemns and call it righteousness. The prophets advocated for the poor and the widow — but they did so within the framework of God's covenant, not against it. True advocacy speaks truth to power; false advocacy speaks ideology to culture and calls it compassion.
• "Christ is the ultimate Advocate — He pleads our case before the Father not on the basis of our merit, but on the basis of His own righteousness."
• "Biblical advocacy is grounded in God's law and speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves — it does not campaign for what Scripture condemns."
