An anointed prophet is one set apart for prophetic office by anointing — oil, hands, or the Spirit's indwelling. Elisha was anointed by Elijah at the LORD's command (1 Kings 19:16). Christ Himself is the Anointed One (Messiah, Christ); His prophetic office is one of three (prophet, priest, king) all signaled by anointing. The saint, indwelt by the Spirit, has an unction from the Holy One (1 Jn 2:20).
(Composite.) A prophet set apart for office by anointing — with oil, by laying on of hands, or by the Spirit.
Three biblical anointings of office: priest (Aaron, Lev 8:12), king (Saul, David, Solomon), and prophet (Elisha, 1 Kgs 19:16). Christ is anointed for all three (Heb 1:9).
1 John 2:20 and 2:27 extend the anointing to every believer: ye have an unction from the Holy One. The saint's anointing is teaching-grade: it abides, it teaches truth, it cannot be reduced to mere ceremony.
1 Kings 19:16 — "And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room."
Isaiah 61:1 — "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek."
Luke 4:18 — "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor."
1 John 2:27 — "But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you."
Modern Christian discourse often uses ‘anointed’ loosely as a celebrity-pastor compliment; Scripture treats it as an office-setting consecration.
Christ's reading of Isaiah 61 in Luke 4 declares the Spirit upon Him because the LORD has anointed Him. The anointed prophet's office is the prophet's, the priest's, and the king's — all three converged in one person.
1 John 2:27 carries the anointing into the church: every saint has it, and it abides, and it teaches. Casual use of ‘anointed’ for star preachers obscures this universal apostolic anointing of every believer in Christ.
Hebrew mashach (to anoint) gives Mashiach (Messiah); Greek chrioō gives Christos.
Hebrew mashach — to anoint; root of Mashiach, Messiah.
Greek chrioō — to anoint; root of Christos, Christ. Same word; both languages.
"Christ's name is His office; Christ means Anointed."
"Every saint has an unction; the anointing is not for celebrities only."
"The anointing teaches and abides — 1 John 2:27 stands."
