Antichrist (Figure)
AN-tee-kryst
noun phrase
Greek antichristos — "against / in place of Christ."

📖 Biblical Definition

The Antichrist is the eschatological adversary who opposes Christ and exalts himself as Christ — the climactic embodiment of the spirit that has always opposed God’s anointed. John gives the doctrine its breadth: "as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists" (1 John 2:18; cf. 2:22; 4:3; 2 John 7). There is therefore both a final figure and a present spirit at work in many. Paul calls him "that man of sin... the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God" (2 Thessalonians 2:3-4). Historic Protestants identified the system in the papacy; futurists expect a final escalation; preterists locate elements in the first-century empire. All agree: Christ destroys him by the brightness of His coming.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

The eschatological adversary opposing Christ and seeking to take His place by deception; in 1 and 2 John, both a final figure to come and a present spirit at work in those denying that Jesus is the Christ come in flesh; identified by Paul as 'the man of sin' (2 Thess 2:3-4).

📖 Key Scripture

1 John 2:18"Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists."

1 John 4:3"Every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist."

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4"Except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Reduced to apocalyptic horror-show speculation, missing John's pastoral point about the spirit of antichrist already at work.

John does not invite us to identify Antichrist; he invites us to identify the spirit of antichrist — denial of the incarnation. Whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ come in flesh is in the antichrist stream. Discernment is more urgent than prediction.
