The antitype is the New Testament fulfillment of a divinely-intended Old Testament type — the substance to which the shadow pointed. Christ is the great antitype of the whole Old Testament: the true Adam (Romans 5:14; 1 Corinthians 15:45), the true Passover lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7), the true Melchizedek (Hebrews 7), the true Israel, the true temple (John 2:21), the true manna (John 6:48-51), the true bronze serpent (John 3:14), the true Davidic king. Peter explicitly calls baptism the antitype of Noah’s flood: "The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us" (1 Peter 3:21; the Greek is antitypon). Reading the Old Testament Christologically means recognizing the antitypes everywhere.
AN'TITYPE, n.
That which corresponds to a type or symbol; specifically, in theology, a person or thing prefigured by a type, as Christ in his offices and work, the antitype of the priesthood, sacrifices and so on of the Mosaic dispensation.
1 Peter 3:21 — "The like figure [antitupon] whereunto even baptism doth also now save us... by the resurrection of Jesus Christ."
Hebrews 9:24 — "Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures [antitupa] of the true; but into heaven itself."
Hebrews 10:1 — "The law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things."
Colossians 2:17 — "The body is of Christ."
Modern Christianity reads the Old Testament without watching for antitypes; Christ is hiding in plain sight.
The book of Hebrews argues for ten chapters that Old Testament tabernacle, priesthood, sacrifices, and rest were shadows of better things. Christ is the antitype of every shadow: a better high priest (Heb 7), a better tabernacle (Heb 9), a better sacrifice (Heb 10), a better rest (Heb 4). The shadows could not save; the antitype does.
Reading the Old Testament without watching for antitypes is missing what the inspiring Spirit embedded. The lamb at Passover is not just a lamb; the manna is not just bread; the rock is not just a rock. Christ Himself, on the Emmaus road, expounded all the Scriptures concerning Himself. So should every preacher and every reader. Look for the antitype; you will keep finding the same Lord.
Greek antitupos (G499).
G499 — antitupos — antitype; corresponding figure
G5179 — tupos — type; pattern
"Christ is the antitype of every shadow; Hebrews makes the case for ten chapters."
"The lamb at Passover is not just a lamb; the manna is not just bread."
"On the Emmaus road, Christ expounded all the Scriptures concerning Himself; preachers should imitate the precedent."
