Batach (בָּטַח) is the Hebrew verb for trust — different from aman (to be firm, the root of amen and emunah). Batach emphasizes the felt-security of leaning the weight of one’s soul on something solid. To trust the LORD is to put your weight on Him with the confidence that He will hold. "Trust [bitchu] in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5); "They that trust [bot’chim] in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever" (Psalm 125:1). The opposite is trusting in chariots, horses, riches, princes — every one of which collapses under enough weight. Batach in YHWH alone holds.
Hebrew "trust" — to lean with felt-security on YHWH.
The Hebrew verb most often translated "trust." Distinguished from aman (firmness, faithfulness, the root of amen): batach emphasizes the felt-security of leaning. To batach in YHWH is to throw your weight on Him with confidence He will not give way. The opposite is to trust horses, princes, riches — supports that buckle.
Psalm 56:3 — "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee."
Proverbs 3:5-6 — "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
Isaiah 26:3-4 — "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength."
Reduced to general optimism ("trust the universe," "trust the process") rather than the specific lean-on-YHWH the verb commands.
The age has generic "trust" — trust your gut, trust the science, trust the universe. Scripture is specific: trust YHWH. Other supports buckle. Horses fall, princes die, riches fly. Only the LORD holds when leaned on with full weight.
Recover the felt-security: batach is leaning. Throw your weight; He holds.
