The calming of the storm is one of the most dramatic demonstrations of Jesus' deity in the Gospels. Jesus had been teaching in parables all day and, exhausted, suggested crossing the Sea of Galilee to the other side. He fell asleep in the stern of the boat on a pillow. The Sea of Galilee is surrounded by mountains, and sudden violent windstorms are characteristic of it. "A great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves" (Matthew 8:24). The boat was filling with water. The experienced fishermen among the disciples (Peter, Andrew, James, John) were terrified — these were men who knew the sea, and they were afraid. They woke Jesus with what might be the most tone-deaf question ever asked God: "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?" (Mark 4:38). Jesus rose, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!" The Greek is stark: siopa, pephimoso — "Be silent, be muzzled!" — the same words used for muzzling a demon. "And the wind ceased and there was a great calm" (4:39). Not just stopping but a sudden galene megale, a "great calm" — unheard-of on that sea after a storm; usually the water takes a long time to subside. Instantaneous stillness. The disciples were more afraid after the miracle than before: "They feared exceedingly, and said to one another, 'Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?'" (4:41). The answer is given throughout the Old Testament: only God rules the sea. Psalm 107:29 — "He calms the storm, so that its waves are still." Psalm 89:9 — "You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, You still them." The disciples were now in a boat with the God who made the storm. The first storm was outside them. The greater storm was now within them: who is this? The miracle reveals not only Christ's power but also His heart. He cared. He was not absent; He was asleep in the boat with them. And when they cried out, He stood and stilled the sea.
Mark 4:38-40 — "But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?" Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!" And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?""
Mark 4:41 — "And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, "Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?""
Psalm 107:28-29 — "Then they cry out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm, so that its waves are still."
Psalm 89:9 — "You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, You still them."
