Walking on Water
/ˈwɔːk.ɪŋ ɒn ˈwɔː.tər/
noun phrase (miracle)
The miracle recorded in Matthew 14:22-33, Mark 6:45-52, and John 6:16-21, immediately after the feeding of the 5,000. Jesus walked across the Sea of Galilee to His disciples' boat during a storm at night, and Peter briefly walked out to meet Him.

📖 Biblical Definition

Walking on water is one of the most iconic miracles of Jesus, and one of the most theologically loaded. After feeding the 5,000, Jesus sent the disciples ahead in a boat while He went up alone to pray. A storm blew up. The disciples were rowing against the wind, making little progress. Around the fourth watch of the night (3-6 AM), they saw a figure walking toward them on the water and cried out in terror, thinking it was a ghost. "But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid'" (Matthew 14:27). The phrase "It is I" in Greek is ego eimi — the same divine name Jesus used in John 8:58 and that God used in Exodus 3:14. Peter, always the first to leap, called out: "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." Jesus said, "Come." And Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But "when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, 'Lord, save me!'" (14:30). Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught Him, saying, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" They got into the boat; the wind ceased; the disciples worshiped, saying, "Truly You are the Son of God" (14:33). The story is rich with meaning. It reveals Jesus' full deity — only God walks on the sea (Job 9:8, "He alone spreads out the heavens, and treads on the waves of the sea"). It shows Peter's pattern — bold faith that falters when he looks at the circumstances instead of Christ. It shows Christ's grace — He saves the sinking disciple immediately, before the rebuke. And it teaches every Christian the lesson of the Christian life: eyes on Christ, you can walk on water; eyes on the storm, you sink.
