Capernaum was the Galilean town on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee that Christ adopted as His ministry headquarters — "his own city" (Matthew 9:1). He taught in its synagogue with such authority that the people were astonished (Mark 1:21-22); He healed the centurion’s servant (Matthew 8:5-13), raised Jairus’s daughter (Mark 5:21-43), and fed the multitudes nearby. Despite witnessing more of Christ’s miracles than any other town, Capernaum did not repent. The Lord pronounced one of His sharpest woes upon it: "And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day" (Matthew 11:23).
CAPER'NAUM, n.
A city of Galilee, on the western shore of the Sea of Tiberias, the chief residence of Christ during His public ministry. Once the most flourishing city of Galilee, now utterly desolate.
Matthew 4:13 — "Leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum."
Matthew 11:23 — "Thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell."
Mark 2:1 — "It was noised that he was in the house."
John 6:59 — "These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum."
Privilege without repentance is the most dangerous spiritual position on earth.
Capernaum saw more miracles than any city in history. Christ healed the paralyzed, the leprous, the demonized; He fed thousands; He raised the dead; He preached the Bread-of-Life sermon there. And He cursed the city. Thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell. Why? Because privilege not yielded becomes accountability multiplied. Sodom would have repented; Capernaum did not.
America is in danger of being a Capernaum. More Bibles per capita than any nation in history; more Christian books, podcasts, conferences, churches, worship songs — and a culture marching backwards. Capernaum is a warning, not just a tourist site. To whom much is given, much is required. Repent while the Galilean light is still shining.
