The Captain of the Host of the LORD is the divine Commander who appeared to Joshua before Jericho, sword drawn (Joshua 5:13-15). Joshua asked, "Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?" The reply: "Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come." Joshua fell on his face and worshipped; the Captain accepted worship ("Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy") — a theophany of the pre-incarnate Christ, the same divine Person who met Moses at the burning bush. The church does not enlist Christ in its battles; Christ enlists the church in His. He does not take sides — He takes command.
Webster 1828: the divine Warrior-Prince who leads the heavenly armies.
Joshua met One whose holiness required shoes off and whose sword was drawn for battle. He is the Commander who fights ahead of His people, not a mere angel but the LORD of hosts in visible form.
Joshua 5:14 — "But as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship."
Joshua 5:15 — "Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy."
Daniel 8:11 — "He magnified himself even to the prince of the host."
Revelation 19:14 — "The armies which were in heaven followed him."
The pacifist church forgets that the Lord came with sword drawn at Jericho.
A church embarrassed by spiritual warfare cannot meet the Captain of the Host. He drew His sword before the walls fell.
The pre-incarnate Christ is no harmless mascot. He is the Captain whose shoes are not loosed, whose holiness is fire, whose army is the heavenly host.
Sar (prince, captain) joined to Tsava (army, host).
