Carmel
KAR-mel
proper noun
Hebrew Karmel (H3760), “garden, fruitful land.” The coastal mountain of Israel, set as a sentinel over the Mediterranean — site of Elijah's contest with the prophets of Baal.

📖 Biblical Definition

Mount Carmel is the wooded coastal mountain rising near modern Haifa — a long, fertile ridge running northwest into the Mediterranean. In Scripture it is the stage of one of the great showdowns of Hebrew religion: Elijah’s contest with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18. "How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him" (v. 21). The two bulls were laid on rival altars; no fire was lit; the prophets of Baal cried all day in vain; Elijah rebuilt the LORD’s altar, drenched the sacrifice, and prayed. Fire fell. All the people fell on their faces: "The LORD, he is the God." Carmel is the mountain where Israel was forced to choose its God.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern faith wants Carmel-style results without Carmel-style obedience.

No major postmodern redefinition of this place. The risk is that the geographic-symbolic resonance Scripture builds with it gets lost — modern readers skim past place-names that the biblical writers used as shorthand for whole histories.
