Scripture establishes distinct offices of leadership in the church — elders (pastors/overseers) and deacons — who are called, qualified, and ordained to shepherd God's people. Paul gave specific qualifications for these offices (1 Timothy 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-9). However, the New Testament also teaches the priesthood of all believers — every Christian has direct access to God through Christ (1 Peter 2:5). The biblical balance is that all believers are priests, but not all are pastors. The ordained ministry exists to equip the saints for the work of ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12), not to create a spiritual aristocracy.
The body of men set apart, and consecrated by due ordination, to the service of God in the Christian church.
CLER'GY, n. The body of men set apart, and consecrated by due ordination, to the service of God in the Christian church; the body of ecclesiastics, in distinction from the laity. Note: Webster distinguished clergy from laity as a functional distinction, not as a spiritual caste.
• 1 Timothy 3:1-7 — Qualifications for overseers (elders/pastors).
• Ephesians 4:11-12 — "He gave the apostles...pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry."
• 1 Peter 2:5 — "You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood."
• 1 Peter 5:1-3 — "Shepherd the flock of God...not domineering over those in your charge."
The clergy-laity divide is either exaggerated into priestly caste or abolished into egalitarian chaos.
Two opposite errors corrupt the biblical understanding of clergy. Roman Catholicism creates a sacerdotal priesthood that mediates between God and man — a role Scripture assigns exclusively to Christ. This system produces a spiritual aristocracy that the Reformation rightly rejected. On the other side, modern egalitarianism abolishes all distinction between ordained leadership and the congregation, treating pastoral authority as oppressive and ordination as unnecessary. The biblical pattern holds both truths: all believers are priests before God, and God has appointed qualified men to the specific offices of elder and deacon to lead, teach, and shepherd His flock.
• "The clergy are not a spiritual caste above the laity — they are servants called, qualified, and ordained to equip the saints for ministry."
• "The priesthood of all believers does not abolish the pastoral office — it means every Christian has access to God, while some are called to lead."
