Conquering King
/KONG-ker-ing KING/
noun phrase
Latin conquaerere (to seek out and overcome) plus Old English cyning. Christ as the King who has conquered and is conquering.

📖 Biblical Definition

"Conquering King" is one of the central New Testament titles for the risen and returning Christ. In Revelation 6:2 He goes forth "conquering, and to conquer" on the white horse — the first seal opened. In Revelation 19:11-16 He returns: "And his eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns... And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations... and he shall rule them with a rod of iron... And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." The saint marches under that King, in His train of triumph: "thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ" (2 Corinthians 2:14).

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

(Composite.) The King who conquers; specifically, Christ as the victorious returning King of Revelation 19.

Two Revelation passages anchor the title: 6:2 (the white-horse rider going forth conquering) and 19:11-16 (the returning Christ as Faithful and True, with the title King of kings, and Lord of lords).

Paul calls Him the one who triumphed openly over principalities and powers (Col 2:15) and who leads us in triumph (2 Cor 2:14).

📖 Key Scripture

Revelation 6:2"And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer."

Revelation 19:11"And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war."

Colossians 2:15"And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it."

2 Corinthians 2:14"Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern Christianity often shrinks Christ to gentle shepherd only; Revelation 19 insists He is also the conquering King, and both pictures are required.

Christ is the Lamb (gentle, slain, sacrificial) and the Lion (conquering, fierce, victorious). Revelation interweaves both. The lamb-only Christ of modern sentiment is half the picture; the lion-only Christ of triumphalism is the other half.

Recover both. The conquering King of Revelation 19 returns with eyes as a flame of fire, with a name no man knew, with a vesture dipped in blood. He is gentle to His own and terrible to His enemies. The household marches in His train of triumph (2 Cor 2:14).

🔗 Greek & Hebrew Roots

Greek nikaō (to conquer) and thriambeuō (to lead in triumph) frame the New Testament concept.
