Counsel
/ˈkaʊn.səl/
noun / verb
Old French conseil, from Latin consilium — plan, deliberation; from consulere (to deliberate). Hebrew: etsah (עֵצָה) — counsel, plan, purpose. Greek: boule (βουλή) — will, purpose, counsel; especially used of God's eternal decreed purpose (Acts 2:23; Eph 1:11).

📖 Biblical Definition

Divine counsel is God's sovereign, eternal purpose — His decreed will that cannot be thwarted. Isaiah 46:10 declares God “accomplishes all my purpose.” The Hebrew etsah carries the weight of authoritative deliberation — when God counsels, He decrees. Human counsel is derivative: Proverbs 11:14 prizes “an abundance of counselors,” and 19:20 commands, “Listen to advice and accept instruction.” The “Wonderful Counselor” of Isaiah 9:6 is not merely a wise advisor but one whose counsel is infallible because it flows from omniscience. Christ is the fullness of divine wisdom and counsel — in Him “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col 2:3).

Webster 1828: COUNSEL — n. 1. Advice; opinion or instruction given to direct the judgment or conduct of another. 2. Deliberation; consultation. 3. Prudence; deliberate purpose; design. 4. In theology, the purpose or decree of God. Webster adds: “Take counsel together — consult and deliberate; and especially receive instruction from God.”

Modern culture has democratized counsel into professional therapy untethered from divine wisdom. “Counseling” now means psychological advice from credentialed professionals, and Scripture is considered one opinion among many. Biblical counseling insists the opposite: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Prov 9:10) — all genuine counsel is grounded in the Word of God. The “Wonderful Counselor” is not a licensed therapist but the Son of God. Human counselors are necessary, but when they operate without the fear of God, they are, as Psalm 1:1 warns, offering “the counsel of the wicked.”
