Demas is one of the saddest character arcs in the New Testament — appearing in just three Pauline texts. In Colossians 4:14 he stands at Paul’s side: "Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you." In Philemon 24 he is listed among "my fellowlabourers". But in 2 Timothy 4:10, written just before Paul’s martyrdom, the line falls: "Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica." From fellow-laborer to deserter — and the diagnosis is the most ordinary failure imaginable: love of this present world. Many men who run well for years are lost the same way. Christian men must guard the heart against the love of now, late as well as early.
DEMAS, n.
A scriptural proper name; in the New Testament, an early fellow-worker of Paul who later abandoned him.
Colossians 4:14 — "Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you."
Philemon 24 — "Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers."
2 Timothy 4:10 — "Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica."
1 John 2:15 — "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world."
Demas was Paul's coworker for years before he loved the world more; modern ministry produces Demases continually.
Demas's name appears three times in the New Testament. In Colossians and Philemon (~AD 60), he is among Paul's fellow-laborers. In 2 Timothy (~AD 67), he has abandoned Paul in his final imprisonment. The intervening years included pressures, fatigue, and a slow drift in affection toward this present world. The arc was not sudden; it was the culmination of small surrenders.
Modern ministry produces Demases continually. The pastor who burns out and disappears; the missionary who quits midterm; the elder who quietly stops attending. Most do not flame out in scandal; they slip toward Thessalonica because they loved the present world. Watch your own heart. Long obedience in the same direction is the cure for Demas-syndrome.
"Demas was Paul's coworker for years before he loved the world more."
"Modern ministry produces Demases continually; the slip is gradual."
"Watch your own heart; long obedience in the same direction is the cure."
