Dystopia
/dɪsˈtoʊ.pi.ə/
noun
From Greek dys- (bad) + topos (place). A society characterized by oppression and dehumanization — often the result of utopian ambitions gone wrong.

📖 Biblical Definition

"Dystopia" — the modern literary term for a deliberately bad social order — has long been forecast by Scripture. The ultimate dystopia is the kingdom of Antichrist described in Revelation 13: controlling commerce by the mark (v. 17) and persecuting the faithful unto death (v. 7). Its archetype is older: Babel, where humanity, united in rebellion, built a tower to heaven to make a name for themselves and were scattered in confusion (Genesis 11:1-9). Every utopian project apart from God ends as dystopia, because man without God cannot govern man. The pattern is consistent: when sinful man seeks paradise without the Lord, he builds hell on earth. The new heavens and new earth come only by Christ’s return.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

Not defined by Webster 1828. The term was coined later.

Webster defines UTOPIA as "a place of ideal perfection." Dystopia is its inverse — the nightmare that emerges when sinful humanity pursues perfection by its own power.

📖 Key Scripture

Revelation 13:16-17 — "No one can buy or sell unless he has the mark."

Genesis 11:4 — "Let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens."

Jeremiah 17:5 — "Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Every utopian project in history has produced dystopia because builders refuse to account for human sin.

The 20th century proved this beyond dispute. The French Revolution produced the Terror. Marxism produced the Gulag and Killing Fields. The sexual revolution produced broken families and millions of aborted children. Every attempt to engineer perfection without accounting for depravity produces worse than what it replaced. The problem is not bad systems but bad hearts.

Usage

• "Every dystopia began as someone's utopian vision — utopians always forget total depravity."

• "Revelation 13 is the ultimate dystopia: total allegiance, total commerce control, total persecution."
