Emet is truth understood as firm, stable reality — that which is reliable and can be depended upon. When Scripture declares that God is a "God of emet" (Psalm 31:5), it means He is the God who can be trusted completely, whose word will not fail, whose character does not shift. Truth in the Bible is not a philosophical abstraction or a proposition floating in logical space; it is a Person. Jesus declared "I am the way, the truth [aletheia/emet], and the life" (John 14:6). Emet is relational before it is propositional — it is the quality of a father who keeps his promises, a king whose word is his bond, a God who cannot lie (Titus 1:2). The opposite of emet is not merely falsehood but instability — the shifting sand of a life built on anything other than God's unchanging word. To walk in emet is to walk in reality as God defines it, not as man imagines it.
TRUTH — Conformity to fact or reality; exact accordance with that which is, or has been, or shall be. Veracity; purity from falsehood; practice of speaking truth; habitual disposition to speak truth. In theology, God is truth. His word, his promises, are truth. "Thy word is truth." John 17:17.
Postmodernism has declared war on emet. "My truth" and "your truth" have replaced the truth. Truth has been relativized into a personal narrative, a social construct, or a power play. Even within the church, "speaking your truth" has replaced "speaking the truth in love" (Ephesians 4:15). The therapeutic model says truth is whatever feels authentic to you; the biblical model says truth is whatever God has declared, regardless of how it feels. The Hebrew concept of emet is stubbornly objective — it is firm ground, not shifting sand. You do not create emet; you discover it, submit to it, and build your life upon it. A culture that has lost emet has lost its foundation. When truth becomes personal opinion, every man does what is right in his own eyes (Judges 21:25), and civilization collapses.
