Entitlement
/ɪnˈtaɪ.təl.mənt/
noun
From Old French entiteler (to give a title to), from Latin titulus (inscription, title). Originally referred to a legal right or claim granted by authority. Now commonly describes a psychological attitude of believing one deserves special treatment without corresponding merit or duty.

📖 Biblical Definition

Scripture demolishes all sense of human entitlement before God. "What do you have that you did not receive?" (1 Corinthians 4:7). Every good gift comes from the Father of lights (James 1:17). The only thing any human being is entitled to is the just punishment for sin: "For the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). Everything above death and hell is grace — unmerited, unearned, and undeserved. The parable of the laborers in the vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16) directly confronts the entitlement mentality: those who worked all day resented the master's generosity to latecomers. Jesus' response: "Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me?"

ENTI'TLE, v.t. 1. To give a title to; to give a claim to. 2. To give a right to demand or receive. Note: Webster understood entitlement as a legitimate legal claim, not a psychological attitude. The modern sense of entitlement as an unjustified feeling of deserving was not current in 1828.

📖 Key Scripture

1 Corinthians 4:7 — "What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?"

Romans 6:23 — "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

James 1:17 — "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights."

Matthew 20:15 — "Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?"

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Entitlement has become the default posture of a culture that demands rights without duties.

Modern culture has produced a generation that believes it is entitled to comfort, happiness, validation, and material provision simply by virtue of existing. This mentality has invaded the church through prosperity theology, which teaches that God owes you health, wealth, and blessing. It also appears in the "church shopping" mentality: believers who feel entitled to a worship experience that meets their preferences, a pastor who never offends them, and a community that serves their emotional needs. Scripture teaches the opposite: you are entitled to nothing. You are a servant. "So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty'" (Luke 17:10). Grace, by definition, is what you do not deserve.

Usage

• "Romans 6:23 says the only wage you have earned is death — everything else is grace, not entitlement."

• "The parable of the laborers in the vineyard destroys the entitlement mentality: God is generous, and you have no claim on His generosity."

• "A culture of entitlement produces people who demand their rights before God; Scripture produces people who marvel at His mercy."
