Biblical faith healing is the sovereign act of God in restoring physical health in response to prayer and faith, according to His will. Scripture records that Jesus healed the sick as a sign of the Kingdom and gave this gift to the apostles. "Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord" (James 5:14). Biblical healing is always subject to God's sovereign will -- Paul's thorn was not removed despite his pleading (2 Corinthians 12:8-9). The power to heal belongs to God alone; faith is the posture of trust, not a force that compels God to act.
Heal: to cure of a disease or wound and restore to soundness; to reconcile.
HEAL, v.t. [Sax. haelan.] 1. To cure of a disease or wound and restore to soundness, or to that state of body in which the natural functions are regularly performed. 2. To cure; to remove or subdue. 3. To reconcile, as a breach or difference. Note: Webster understood healing as God's restorative act -- making whole what sin has broken. There is no trace of healing as a technique humans command.
• James 5:14-15 — "Let them pray over Him, anointing Him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick."
• Matthew 10:8 — "Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay."
• 2 Corinthians 12:9 — "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."
• Acts 3:6 — "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!"
Faith healing has been distorted into a manipulative prosperity technique.
Modern faith healing movements, particularly within the Word of Faith and prosperity gospel camps, have turned divine healing into a human-controlled transaction. They teach that sufficient faith guarantees physical healing and that sickness persists only because of the sick person's lack of faith. This is spiritual abuse. It blames the suffering believer for God's sovereign decision and turns prayer into incantation. Paul left Trophimus sick at Miletus (2 Timothy 4:20). Timothy had frequent ailments (1 Timothy 5:23). Televangelists who stage fake healings for donations are wolves in sheep's clothing who exploit the desperate and dishonor the God who heals according to His perfect will.
• "Biblical faith healing submits to God's sovereign will -- it does not demand miracles on command like a vending machine of the supernatural."
• "The prosperity preacher who tells a dying woman her cancer persists because she lacks faith is not practicing faith healing -- he is practicing spiritual cruelty."
