The terminal digit of the hand; in Scripture, the body part associated with the most direct divine action. The finger of God wrote the Decalogue at Sinai (Ex 31:18) and engraved the verdict on Belshazzar's wall; Christ said it was by the finger of God that He cast out devils (Luke 11:20); and at John 8 He wrote in the dust with His finger when the Pharisees brought the woman caught in adultery.
FIN'GER, n.
1. One of the five extreme members of the hand. 2. The finger of God, in scripture, denotes the divine power.
Exodus 31:18 — "Two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God."
Daniel 5:5 — "Came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall."
Luke 11:20 — "But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you."
John 8:6 — "Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground."
Modern culture is obsessed with whole-hand power; Scripture takes a finger.
The finger of God is one of the gentlest and most devastating images in Scripture. The hand of God hurls thunderbolts and parts seas; the finger of God writes — quietly, deliberately, permanently. The Decalogue was finger-written; the verdict on Belshazzar was finger-written; the kingdom of God arrived in casting out demons by the finger of God; and Christ Himself stooped to write in the dust with His finger while the woman's accusers shifted nervously.
The text does not tell us what He wrote. Many speculate sins of the accusers; the Greek implies a scratching, perhaps over and over. What He did say is enough: he that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. One by one they left, oldest first. The finger of God writes the verdict still — sometimes in stone, sometimes in dust; always with full authority. Pay attention to where He is writing.
