Fisherman
FISH-er-mun
noun
Old English fiscere. Greek halieus (G231), “sea-worker.” The trade of at least four of Christ's twelve apostles (Peter, Andrew, James, John); the figure Christ Himself used for evangelism: I will make you fishers of men.

📖 Biblical Definition

A worker on the Sea of Galilee or other waters; the trade of at least four of Christ's twelve apostles (Peter, Andrew, James, John). Christ called them with the most famous repurposing of a trade in Scripture: follow me, and I will make you fishers of men (Matt 4:19). The same skills — patience, casting, mending nets, working in teams, reading the water — were redirected toward harvesting souls.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern ministry recruits credentialed elites; Christ called fishermen.

Christ's ministry-recruiting strategy in Mark 1 is striking. He passes synagogue scholars, priests, and Pharisees and walks down to the seashore to call fishermen. Peter and Andrew are mending nets when He says follow me; they leave the nets and go. Modern ministry pipelines often run the opposite direction — seminaries, credentialing committees, internship hierarchies, with fishermen at the bottom of the funnel.

The Lord still calls fishermen. He is not opposed to credentials; Paul the Pharisee was used mightily. But He is unembarrassed to start with the working class, the manual laborers, the ones who have spent the night in the boat with empty nets. The same patience, perseverance, and team-work that catch fish disciple souls. If you are a fisherman, do not assume the call passes you by; it may begin with your nets in the morning.
