Pure Heart
/pjʊər hɑrt/
noun phrase
Greek katharos kardia — a heart cleansed and unmixed, the dwelling place of God and the prerequisite for seeing Him.

📖 Biblical Definition

A pure heart is a heart cleansed by the blood of Christ, unmixed in its devotion, single in its love — the place where God dwells and from which true charity flows. Jesus’ sixth Beatitude promises the beatific vision: "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God" (Matthew 5:8). The pure heart is contrasted with the divided heart (James 4:8: "purify your hearts, ye double minded") and the defiled heart (Mark 7:21-23). It is the goal of Paul’s teaching: "the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart" (1 Timothy 1:5). Christ purifies it by His blood; we keep it by quick repentance, watchfulness, and singleness of aim. Only the pure-hearted will see God face to face.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Confused with naivete or moralistic self-image.

expand to see more

The world hears “pure heart” and pictures innocence untouched by knowledge, or sincerity untested by sin. Both are sentimental: one pretends never to have fallen, the other excuses present mixture as authenticity.

Scripture means something else. A pure heart is washed, not unwounded. It has known its corruption, fled to the blood, and now beats single—loving God without rival and neighbor without manipulation. The reward is the highest joy of heaven: it sees God.
