Humility is the accurate estimation of oneself before a holy God — not self-deprecation or false modesty, but the settled conviction that apart from God's grace, one is nothing. It is the foundational posture of the redeemed soul. The proud man places himself at the center of the universe; the humble man places God there. Scripture consistently promises that God "opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6). The supreme model is Christ Himself, who, being God, "made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant" (Philippians 2:7). Biblical humility is not weakness — it is the strength to place another above oneself.
HUMILITY, n. In ethics, freedom from pride and arrogance; lowliness of mind; a modest estimate of one's own worth. In theology, humility consists in a low estimate of one's own unworthiness before God and as compared with his infinite greatness and holiness. Humility is a grace that shines in a high degree in the character of Christ.
Contemporary culture confuses humility with low self-esteem, false modesty, or the performance of self-deprecation on social media ("Honored and humbled to receive this award!"). Secular therapy often treats humility as a psychological disorder to be cured by building "self-confidence." The self-esteem movement has made pride a virtue and humility a liability. But God's economy runs in the opposite direction: "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted" (Matthew 23:12).
