The Image of God (Imago Dei) is the unique dignity and capacity with which God endowed humanity at creation. "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them" (Genesis 1:27). This image includes rationality, moral agency, relational capacity, creativity, and dominion over creation. It is the basis for the sanctity of human life: "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall His blood be shed, for God made man in His own image" (Genesis 9:6). Though marred by the fall, the image of God is not erased — every human being, from conception to death, bears it. Christ is "the image of the invisible God" (Colossians 1:15), and believers are being renewed in that image through sanctification.
A representation or likeness; in theology, the moral likeness of God in man.
IMAGE, n. [L. imago.] 1. A representation or similitude of any person or thing. 2. In theology, the likeness of God in man, consisting in knowledge, righteousness, and true holiness. Webster understood the image of God as a moral and intellectual endowment, not a physical form.
• Genesis 1:27 — "So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created Him; male and female He created them."
• Genesis 9:6 — "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall His blood be shed, for God made man in His own image."
• Colossians 1:15 — "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation."
• James 3:9 — "With the tongue we curse people who are made in the likeness of God."
• 2 Corinthians 3:18 — "We all... are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another."
The Imago Dei is either denied by materialists or distorted into self-deification.
Secular materialism denies the image of God entirely, reducing human beings to sophisticated animals — products of random mutation with no inherent dignity. This view provides no basis for human rights, the sanctity of life, or moral obligation. On the other extreme, some New Age and progressive theologies twist the Imago Dei into self-deification — "you are god" theology that inflates the image-bearer into the image itself. The biblical doctrine holds both truths: humanity has extraordinary dignity as God's image-bearers AND is radically dependent on God as creatures. The image of God is not license for self-worship; it is the grounds for worship of the God whose image we bear.
• "Every human being — regardless of age, ability, ethnicity, or condition — bears the image of God and possesses inherent, inviolable dignity."
• "The prohibition against murder is grounded not in social contract but in the Imago Dei — to destroy a human life is to assault the image of the Creator."
• "Christ is the perfect Image of God — what Adam lost, Christ restores, and believers are being transformed into that image."
