The intercession of Christ is His continual, present ministry at the right hand of God, where He pleads on behalf of believers before the Father. "He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them" (Hebrews 7:25). Paul declares: "Christ Jesus is the one who died — more than that, who was raised — who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us" (Romans 8:34). This is not Christ begging an unwilling Father — it is the glorified Son presenting the completed work of His sacrifice as the eternal basis for the Father's mercy toward His people. The intercession of Christ is the guarantee that no accusation can stand against the elect.
The act of interceding; mediation; interposition between parties at variance, with a view to reconciliation.
INTERCESSION, n. [L. intercessio.] The act of interceding; mediation; interposition between parties at variance, with a view to reconciliation; prayer or solicitation to one party in favor of another. The intercession of Christ is the continual presentation of His merits before the Father on behalf of sinners.
• Hebrews 7:25 — "He always lives to make intercession for them."
• Romans 8:34 — "Christ Jesus... is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us."
• 1 John 2:1 — "If anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous."
• John 17:9 — "I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me."
Christ's unique intercession is obscured by the multiplication of human mediators.
Some traditions interpose saints, Mary, priests, and other human mediators between the believer and God, diminishing the sufficiency and uniqueness of Christ's intercession. Paul is explicit: "There is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Timothy 2:5). While believers are called to pray for one another, no human mediator stands between the believer and the Father as Christ does. His intercession is not merely prayer — it is the presentation of His own atoning blood as the grounds for ongoing forgiveness, access, and favor. To add other mediators is to imply that Christ's mediation is insufficient.
• "Christ does not merely pray for us as a friend — He intercedes as our High Priest, presenting His sacrifice as the basis for the Father's mercy."
• "Romans 8:34 is the foundation of the believer's security — if Christ is interceding for you, who can successfully condemn you?"
