Iron is biblical strength — often harsh. Og's bed was of iron (Deut 3:11); the Philistines had chariots of iron that terrified Israel (Judg 1:19); Goliath's spear-head weighed 600 shekels of iron (1 Sam 17:7). Egypt was "the iron furnace" of Israel's bondage (Deut 4:20, 1 Kgs 8:51). In Daniel 2, the fourth kingdom is iron — crushing everything (Dan 2:40). The Messiah will rule "with a rod of iron" (Ps 2:9, Rev 2:27, 19:15) — iron is the metal of decisive royal rule. And "iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another" (Prov 27:17) — brotherhood as forge, where hard meets hard and both sharpen.
I'RON, n.
I'RON, n. [Sax. isen.] A metal of great strength and hardness, widely used for tools, weapons, and structure. In Scripture, iron is the metal of military strength, of Egyptian bondage ("the iron furnace"), of the fourth kingdom of Daniel that crushed the world, of the Messiah's rod of rule. And, in Proverbs' most famous industrial metaphor, iron is the material of brotherhood: iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
Proverbs 27:17 — "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another."
Psalm 2:9 — "You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel."
Deuteronomy 4:20 — "But the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt."
Revelation 19:15 — "From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron."
Iron brotherhood is now rare. Men avoid sharpening each other; sharpening requires friction. Recover iron.
Proverbs 27:17 requires two hard things in contact. Soft materials cannot sharpen each other; they only smudge. Iron brotherhood requires men willing to say hard truths, take hard correction, and remain in relationship through the friction. Modern male friendship often flees conflict — everyone stays soft, no one sharpens. The iron-friendship alternative produces men with edges. It is MOOP's whole ministry motto for a reason. Recover iron.
