Jesus
JEE-zuhs
proper noun
From Greek Iēsous, transliterating Hebrew Yeshua (יֵשׁוּעַ) — short for Yehoshua, "YHWH saves."

📖 Biblical Definition

The proper name of the eternal Son of God incarnate. Greek Iesous, transliterating Hebrew/Aramaic Yeshua / Yehoshua (Joshua) — meaning The LORD saves or Yahweh is salvation. Given by the angel to Joseph: thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins (Matt 1:21). The name itself encodes the mission. Christ's earthly life unfolds in the four Gospels: born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem; grown up in Nazareth; baptized by John in the Jordan and announced from heaven as the beloved Son; preached the kingdom of God for three years across Galilee, Samaria, and Judea; performed miracles authenticating His identity; chose and trained twelve apostles; was rejected by His own people's leaders; was crucified under Pontius Pilate at Passover, AD 30 or 33; rose bodily the third day; appeared to many witnesses over forty days; ascended to the Father; sent the Spirit at Pentecost. He is presently seated at the Father's right hand interceding for His people, and will return personally and visibly to consummate the kingdom. His name is the only name given among men whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12).

The Savior of men, the Christ.

The Savior of men, the Christ, the Anointed of God, sent into the world to save sinners by His death and resurrection. The name above every name.

📖 Key Scripture

Matthew 1:21"And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins."

Acts 4:12"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

Philippians 2:9-10"Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

The name reduced to casual exclamation or vague spiritual figure stripped of His specific saving work.

Modern usage drains the name of content. Used as profanity or as a sentimental "Jesus loves everybody" cliché, the actual scriptural Jesus — incarnate, crucified, risen, returning Judge — disappears. Recovering the name means recovering the man and the mission: the Word made flesh who saves sinners by substitutionary death.
