Jethro
/ˈdʒɛθ.roʊ/
proper noun
Hebrew Yithro (יִתְרוֹ) — "his excellence" or "abundance." Priest of Midian and father-in-law of Moses. Also called Reuel (Exodus 2:18) and Hobab (Numbers 10:29 may refer to his son).

📖 Biblical Definition

Jethro was the priest of Midian who took Moses into his family after Moses fled Egypt, giving him his daughter Zipporah as wife. Years later, when Moses led Israel out of Egypt, Jethro came to meet him in the wilderness and heard all that the LORD had done. His response: "Blessed be the LORD, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh... Now I know that the LORD is greater than all the gods" (Exodus 18:10-11). Jethro then gave Moses the counsel that reorganized Israel's entire judicial system: "Select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens" (Exodus 18:21). Moses listened to his father-in-law. Jethro is a model of the wise elder whose counsel the younger man accepts, and a reminder that the fear of God is not limited to Israel — a Midianite priest recognized Yahweh as greater than all gods and became a blessing to God's people.
