The lake of fire is mentioned five times in Revelation 19-20 and is the most graphic eschatological revelation in Scripture. It is distinct from Hades (which is itself eventually thrown into the lake), distinct from the abyss (the demonic prison), and final — tormented day and night for ever and ever. The torment is conscious, unending, and just.
Modern Christianity often retreats from this passage. Hard-cessationist scholars relegate Revelation to the first-century Roman context; soft-evangelical pulpits skip the imagery; progressive Christianity rewrites it as metaphor or annihilates the doctrine entirely. The apostle saw what he saw. The Lord who absorbed the lake of fire's judgment for His own at Calvary is the same Lord who throws the unrepentant into it at the end. Both halves of the Revelation are true. Receive the redemption while the door is open.
