To lead in Scripture is to guide, direct, and conduct another along a path. God leads His people: "He maketh me to lie down... he leadeth me beside the still waters" (Psalm 23:2); "He shall feed his flock like a shepherd... and shall gently lead those that are with young" (Isaiah 40:11). The Spirit leads the sons of God (Romans 8:14). Pastors lead the flock (Hebrews 13:7, 17); husbands lead their wives (1 Corinthians 11:3; Ephesians 5:23); fathers lead their households (Genesis 18:19). The Shepherd-image is foundational: a leader walks ahead, knows the way, calls his charges by name, and accepts responsibility for getting them home.
In KJV: leadeth — sustained guidance, never-finished shepherding.
Psalm 23:2-3: "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness." Four continuous-tense verbs — the Shepherd’s ongoing care.
Romans 8:14: "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." Continuous Spirit-leading is the marker of sonship.
Isaiah 40:11: "He shall feed his flock like a shepherd... and shall gently lead those that are with young." The leading is calibrated to the led.
To guide, direct, conduct.
To go before; to guide; to direct; to conduct; in Scripture especially of God’s shepherding leading of His people, the Spirit’s leading of the saint, and the under-shepherd’s leading of the flock.
Psalm 23:2-3 — "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake."
Romans 8:14 — "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God."
Isaiah 40:11 — "He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young."
"Leadership" inflated to celebrity-CEO model rather than shepherd-leading-from-the-front.
Modern leadership-talk emphasizes vision-casting, charisma, and platform. Biblical leading is shepherding — going first into hard ground, knowing each sheep, calibrating pace to the weakest. The Shepherd leads gently those with young.
Recover the figure: lead by going first, by knowing your people, by gentleness with the weak.
