Lucifer
LOO-si-fer
proper noun
Latin Lucifer, “light-bringer” or “morning star.” The Latin Vulgate's translation of Hebrew helel (H1966), “shining one,” in Isaiah 14:12 — traditionally read as a description of Satan's pre-fall identity and his prideful descent.

📖 Biblical Definition

The Latin Lucifer (“light-bringer, morning star”) translates the Hebrew helel (“shining one”) in Isaiah 14:12 — How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! The passage is set in the form of a taunt against the king of Babylon but has been read since the early church as a window into Satan's pre-fall identity and prideful descent. The same imagery undergirds Ezekiel 28's lament over the king of Tyre.

📖 Key Scripture

Isaiah 14:12"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!"

Isaiah 14:13"For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God."

Ezekiel 28:14"Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth."

Luke 10:18"I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

The original sin was self-exaltation; Lucifer's “I will” is the template for every prideful fall.

Isaiah 14:13-14 records five terrible I wills in succession: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God, I will sit upon the mount of the congregation, I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the most High. Self-exaltation against the rule of God is the original sin in heaven; pride is the first apostasy of any creature.

Christ's line in Luke 10:18 is breathtaking: I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. The Lord remembered. He saw it happen. The same Lord who saw the fall is the Lord who promises to bruise Satan under the saints' feet (Rom 16:20). Lucifer's pattern is the warning to every Christian leader: the gift was light-bearing, the corruption was self-exalting, the end was the lake of fire. Stay small. Reflect the Lord's light. Refuse the five I wills.
