Lukewarm
/ˈluːk.wɔːrm/
adjective
From Middle English luke (tepid, moderately warm) and warm. The Greek equivalent is chliaros (tepid, lukewarm), used only in Revelation 3:16. The word describes a state of spiritual indifference — neither hot with zeal nor cold with honest rejection, but a nauseating middle ground of nominal religion.

📖 Biblical Definition

Lukewarmness is the spiritual condition Christ condemned most severely. To the church at Laodicea He said: "Because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth" (Revelation 3:16). Laodicea was wealthy, self-sufficient, and comfortable — they believed they needed nothing. Christ's verdict was devastating: "You are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked" (Revelation 3:17). Lukewarmness is not moderate faith — it is no faith disguised as faith. It is the most dangerous spiritual condition because it inoculates against the gospel: the lukewarm person believes they are saved while showing no evidence of spiritual life. They attend church but do not worship, read the Bible but do not obey, pray but do not depend on God. Christ would rather a person be cold — honestly opposed — than lukewarm.

LUKEWARM, adj. 1. Moderately warm; tepid. 2. Not ardent; not zealous; cool; indifferent. As applied to religion, lukewarm means having an indifference to truth and duty. Note: Webster recognized lukewarmness as spiritual indifference — a state far more dangerous than open opposition because it masquerades as faith.

📖 Key Scripture

Revelation 3:15-17 — "I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot ... So, because you are lukewarm ... I will spit you out of my mouth."

Revelation 3:19-20 — "Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent."

Romans 12:11 — "Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord."

Matthew 7:21-23 — "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Lukewarmness has been rebranded as balanced, moderate, or non-judgmental faith.

The modern church has made lukewarmness a virtue by calling it balance, moderation, and tolerance. The believer who is zealous for truth is called extreme; the one who is passionate about holiness is called judgmental; the one who takes doctrine seriously is called divisive. Meanwhile, the lukewarm churchgoer who offends no one, challenges nothing, and risks nothing is held up as the model Christian. But Christ did not commend balance — He commended zeal. He did not praise the moderate — He rebuked the indifferent. The Laodicean church is the portrait of comfortable Western Christianity: rich, respectable, and revolting to Christ.

Usage

• "Christ would rather you be cold in honest rejection than lukewarm in comfortable religious pretense."

• "The modern church has rebranded lukewarmness as moderation — but Scripture calls it nauseating to God."

• "Laodicea thought it was rich and in need of nothing — Christ said it was wretched, blind, and naked. That is the danger of lukewarmness."
