Philosophical materialism is the worldview that reduces all reality to matter. Thoughts, feelings, love, beauty, consciousness, morality, God, souls — everything — must be explained entirely by the arrangement and motion of physical particles, or else explained away as illusion. Materialism is the unofficial metaphysical commitment of most modern Western science education and secular culture. It is also self-defeating, for several reasons: (1) The claim "only matter exists" is itself not a material thing but an idea — if it is true, it is not matter, and therefore (by its own standard) does not exist as true; (2) Materialism cannot account for consciousness — the fact that the neurons in your brain don't just process information but experience it; (3) Materialism cannot account for logical laws, mathematics, or moral obligations, which are not material things; (4) Materialism cannot account for the reliability of reason itself — if our thoughts are merely the deterministic output of chemical reactions, there is no reason to trust them (as C.S. Lewis argued); (5) Materialism, consistently held, leads to nihilism, because if everything is just matter, nothing has any intrinsic meaning. The Christian worldview is radically different: God spoke the material world into being, declared it good, and filled it with non-material realities (spirits, souls, angels, moral obligations, beauty, truth). The cross is the ultimate rebuke of materialism: the God who is pure Spirit took on flesh, redeemed it, and will one day raise it incorruptible.
John 4:24 — "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."
2 Corinthians 4:18 — "While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal."
Hebrews 11:3 — "By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible."
Colossians 1:16 — "For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible."
