The word "scientism" is a modern coinage. Webster 1828 defined SCIENCE as "in a general sense, knowledge, or certain knowledge; the comprehension or understanding of truth or facts by the mind." Notably, Webster did not limit knowledge to empirical investigation -- he understood knowledge as encompassing truth from any source, including revelation. The reduction of "knowledge" to "what science discovers" would have been foreign to his framework.
