Scientism
/ˈsaɪ.ən.tɪz.əm/
noun
From Latin scientia (knowledge) + -ism. Not to be confused with science itself. Scientism is the belief that the scientific method is the only valid path to knowledge and that science alone can answer all meaningful questions -- including questions of morality, meaning, beauty, and God. It is science elevated to a religion.

📖 Biblical Definition

Scripture celebrates the study of God's creation -- "It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out" (Proverbs 25:2). Science, properly understood, is an exploration of the works of God's hands. But scientism makes a claim that science itself cannot support: that science is the only source of knowledge. This is a philosophical assertion, not a scientific finding. It cannot be tested in a laboratory. It is a faith statement masquerading as a conclusion. Scripture insists that the most important truths -- God's existence, His moral law, the meaning of life, the reality of sin and salvation -- are known through divine revelation, not through the scientific method. "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom" (Psalm 111:10), not the peer review process.

The word "scientism" is a modern coinage. Webster 1828 defined SCIENCE as "in a general sense, knowledge, or certain knowledge; the comprehension or understanding of truth or facts by the mind." Notably, Webster did not limit knowledge to empirical investigation -- he understood knowledge as encompassing truth from any source, including revelation. The reduction of "knowledge" to "what science discovers" would have been foreign to his framework.

📖 Key Scripture

Proverbs 25:2 — "It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out."

Psalm 111:10 — "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom."

1 Timothy 6:20 — "Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called 'knowledge.'"

Colossians 2:8 — "See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Scientism has become the unofficial religion of the modern West, demanding unquestioning faith in "The Science."

Scientism demands the same reverence for "science" that Christianity gives to Scripture -- except it brooks even less dissent. To question "the science" is treated as heresy. Scientists are treated as a priestly class whose pronouncements are beyond question. But this is not science; this is scientism -- the idolatry of a method. Real science is humble, provisional, and self-correcting. Scientism is dogmatic, absolute, and intolerant of challenge. In the church, scientism pressures pastors to defer to scientific consensus on every issue, from origins to ethics, treating the Bible as authoritative only where it does not contradict current scientific opinion. Paul's warning about "what is falsely called knowledge" (1 Timothy 6:20) speaks directly to this error.

Usage

• "Scientism is not science -- it is the philosophical claim that science is the only source of truth, a claim that science itself cannot verify."

• "When 'trust the science' becomes an unquestionable dogma, science has been replaced by scientism -- a faith without a God."

• "The Bible celebrates studying God's creation; it condemns making a god out of the method of study."
