Metsudah (מְצוּדָה) is the Hebrew word for fortress — specifically a mountain stronghold, the cliff-side citadel rather than a walled city. David hid in such strongholds (metsudoth) when fleeing Saul: "And David said unto his father and to his mother... Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me. And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold" (1 Samuel 22:3-5; 23:14). The word then becomes a divine title in the Psalms: "The LORD is my rock, and my fortress [metsudah], and my deliverer" (Psalm 18:2; cf. 31:3; 71:3; 91:2; 144:2). YHWH Himself is the mountain stronghold of the saint.
Hebrew "fortress" — the mountain stronghold; YHWH as fastness.
The Hebrew word for fortress, specifically a mountain stronghold — a heavily-fortified high place difficult to assault. David's wilderness years were spent in literal metsudoth; he then turned the language toward YHWH in his psalms: "the LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer" (Ps 18:2). The masada (related word) at the Dead Sea is a real example.
Psalm 18:2 — "The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower."
Psalm 31:3 — "For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me."
Psalm 91:2 — "I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust."
Modern "fortress" suggests military-history museum piece; the active-stronghold-of-the-saint sense has dimmed.
Modern "fortress" is castle-tour vocabulary. Hebrew metsudah is active stronghold — the place from which to fight, the place that cannot be taken, the place where the king is safe. David lived in literal ones; we live in YHWH the spiritual fortress.
Recover the height: metsudah is not just walls but height. The fortress is on the mountain. To trust YHWH is to take the high ground.
